Pakistan is a gem of a place when it comes to natural beauty. It is blessed with a lot of beautiful places and Skardu is one of them. Skardu is one of the most gorgeous places in Pakistan situated in Gilgit-Baltistan at an altitude of 8200 feet.

Skardu is surrounded by three mountains ranges and has the World’s second-highest mountain known as K2. That attracts mountaineers, trekkers and tourists not just from Pakistan but from around the globe.

Tourists can not only enjoy rivers, lakes but can also enjoy the sandy dunes of Katpana known as the cold desert. Many places of Skardu can fill oneself with feelings of joy that no picture or word can define. Even though Pakistan is a third world country, still its beauty and places like Skardu attracts a lot of peoples from all over the world. And these are some of the places to visit in Skardu.

1. Kachura Lake

One of the most beautiful lakes of all time is Upper Kachura Lake. Surrounded by magnificent mountains and old alpine trees that reflect in the fresh and clear water of the lake, creating a breath-taking view. Those red coloured huts around the lake create a splendid and rememberable scene.

The interesting thing is that there is no clear source of this lake but still its water looks clean and refreshing. And many tourists visit this place every year.

2. Kharpucho Fort

Skardu even has places to visit for people that have an interest in archaeological and historical places. Kharpucho fort is no exception. This fort is known to be built by Maqppons on the bank of the river Indus. And this century-old fort is filled with architecture that can take one’s imagination to the past.

Tourists can see the gorgeous view of Skardu from the fort top. Even though the passage of time has left scars on this fort, still it is a well-visited tourist spot. This fort was built to keep an eye on the trade routes of Skardu and even at night, its border gives a sense of old times, when this fort was still in use by the rulers of Skardu.

3. Shigar

As I said Skardu has both historical and natural places to visit. And Shigar is a perfect pair of both. Shigar fort an attraction of many archaeologists and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the award-winning fort is one of those historical places.


The origins of this fort aren’t clear but it is said to be about 700 years old. Nowadays it is converted into a museum and a hotel that is run by Serena Hotels.

But Shigar is not just famous for this fort but it is also well-known for its natural beauty including, lakes like Jarbazo lake, freshwater streams, mountains ranges and a route towards the magnificent K2 mountain.

4. Manthoka Waterfall

Manthoka waterfall is situated in Kharmang valley. The natural beauty of Manthoka waterfall combined with its green pastures, rocky hills and the cold breeze is no doubt touches the heart of a person.

This simple yet amazing sight of the waterfall must be visited. Not only in summer but in winter when low temperature freezes its water, it stills holds its beauty and is an act of God.

5. Khaplu Valley

Khaplu is 64 miles east of Skardu. Both Khaplu valley and its people make it a nice place to stay and appreciate the creation of God. This valley is filled with lush green pastures, apple orchards, apricot and freshwater streams. This makes Khaplu one of the most beautiful places to visit in Skardu. 150 years old palace of its previous ruler is also a great sight.

Even the people of Khaplu are quite nice and it is always a good thing to see that they haven’t left their customs and traditions yet. Even in this age of technology, one can see the old ways of living and old traditions in Khaplu. Tourists can also visit Chaqchan mosque which means “Miraculous Mosque” and dates back to 1370. This mosque represents a combination of Tibetan, Mughal and Persian style of architecture.

6. Basho Valley

The list of places to visit in Skardu isn’t complete without talking about Basho Valley. After 2 hours of drive from Skardu, one can see the most popular camping sight in Skardu. Basho valley with its numerous trees, lush green areas and cold-water streams is a must to visit.

This valley is blessed with beautiful views. But it is not it, at night you can see a breath-taking view of the sky filled with an uncountable number of stars. And anyone can lose words in defining those feelings that rush into you while looking at the sky full of stars.

7. Satpara Lake

Skardu is filled with many beautiful lakes and each lake has its view and its importance. Satpara is also one of the most beautiful places to visit in Skardu. Unlike the Kachura lake, its source of water is known which is the melting ice of the Deosai Plains.

This lake can be reached by travelling about 6 miles in the South od Skardu. Satpara lake with its blueish clear water presents a view that is a feast for the eyes. There is an island in heart of Satpara lake and one can reach there by boating.

One of the activities tourists can do is to eat trout fish freshly made near the Satpara lake. In 2011, a dam was also built near Satpara lake and now has four powerhouse unit operating with that dam. This lake is also loved by many fisherman and ornithologists (who studies birds), as many birds migrate here from Siberia.

8. Deosai

Eighth place on the list is the famous Land of Giants. A land that is said to be so peaceful that one can hear his heartbeat. It is a must-visit place. Deosai is also known as the roof ground of the world is full of rare wildlife, stupendous views, colourful culture, lakes and many more.

These plains are situated at an altitude of 4114 metres and are considered the second-highest plateaus in the world. Its brown bear is also famous and is very rare to find, if you are lucky then you might see it.

9. Sheosar Lake

Deosai Plains are quite beautiful on their own but Sheosar lake increases its beauty even more. This lake is located in the Deosai Plains and is a heart-shaped lake when viewed from above. It is known as one of the highest lakes in the world at an elevation of 4142 metres.

Sheosar is in a league of its own. It touches the heart of the person no matter which season you visit it in. Surrounded by green Deosai plains in spring or cold snow in winter or seen in the shining rays of summer, this lake presents a breath-taking view every time you visit it.

10. Manthal Buddha Rock

While Buddhism remains a major religion in the world, in Gilgit-Baltistan before the arrival of Islam many people preached this religion but now there not many remainings of Buddhist culture, but out of the remaining things, Manthal Buddhist Rock is one.

It is a large granite rock with rock carvings on it. And it reflects the history of Buddhist culture. Many tourists going towards Satpara lake, stop at this rock located on Sadpara road.
